How to Play Roulette

Roulette is one of the most iconic casino games globally, known for its simplicity. Whether you’re new to the game or looking to enhance your understanding, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about playing roulette, from basic rules to the various betting options available.

Introduction to Roulette

It’s a numbers game! A roulette table consists of a wheel, a ball, and a ‘layout’ (which shows the numbers from the wheel and other bets available). All you need to do is place your bets onto the layout based on which number you think the ball is going to land in at the end of its spin.

Roulette Basics

The Roulette Wheel

The roulette wheel is divided into numbered compartments, with numbers ranging from 1 to 36 in alternating red and black colours, plus one green coloured zero. The numbers on the wheel are not in numerical order but are placed to create balance between red and black, odd and even, and high and low numbers.

The Table Layout

The table layout is where players place their bets, corresponding to the numbers on the wheel. It consists of two main sections. Inside bets are bets placed directly on specific numbers or small groups of numbers and outside bets are bets placed on broader categories, such as red/black or odd/even.

How to Play Roulette

Placing Your Bets

Once you arrive at the roulette table, purchase your chips from the dealer (known as the croupier). Roulette uses special coloured chips unique to each player to avoid confusion. These coloured chips are exclusive to the table where they are purchased and cannot be used at other tables.

You will be given coloured chips unique to you to ensure that any other player, the dealing staff and you, know which bets you have made. The minimum and maximum bet amount is shown at each table.

When placing your chips for an inside bet, ensure they are placed on top of other players’ chips rather than beside them. This ensures all bets are correctly positioned on the table.

If you need assistance placing your bets, you can ask the dealer to place them for you, preferably before the ball is spun. The dealer will help you reach other sections of the table if necessary.

The croupier will spin the ball and announce, “No more bets,” to indicate that the time for placing bets has ended. Once this announcement is made, players must not touch the betting layout or adjust their bets in any way.

Spin and Outcome

The croupier spins the ball in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel. As the ball slows, it will land in one of the numbered pockets. The winning number is marked with a special marker known as the dolly. Losing chips are then cleared from the table before the croupier pays out the winning bets.

Cashing Out

When you have finished playing, before moving away from the table, ask the dealer to ‘cash in’ (change) any colour chips you have for cash chips which can then be used at any other gaming table or exchanged at the Cash Desk for cash.

Types of Roulette Bets

Roulette offers a wide range of betting options, each with different odds and payouts. Here’s a breakdown of the most common bet types:

Inside Bets

1. Straight Up: Betting on a single number. Pays 35:1.

2. Split: Betting on two adjacent numbers on the layout. Pays 17:1.

3. Street: Betting on three numbers in a horizontal row. Pays 11:1.

4. Corner: Betting on four numbers that form a square. Pays 8:1.

5. Six-Line: Betting on two adjacent rows of three numbers. Pays 5:1.

Outside Bets

Red or Black: Bet on all red or all black numbers. Pays 1:1.

Odd or Even: Bet on all odd or even numbers. Pays 1:1.

High or Low: Bet on numbers 1-18 (low) or 19-36 (high). Pays 1:1.

6. Columns or Dozens: Bet on 12 consecutive numbers or one of the three columns of numbers. Pays 2:1. These bets lose if zero is spun

Even Chances

7. Even Chances bets in roulette offer a 1 to 1 payout on Odd or Even, Red or Black, or 1-18 or 19-36; if zero is spun while you have a bet on any of these, you will retain half your bet.

Track Bets

Track bets in roulette are specialised bets placed on specific sections of the wheel rather than the table layout. They are often available on a special racetrack-shaped section of the table or placed verbally with the dealer. These include:

  • Tiers du Cylindre: Covers a third of the wheel, specifically 12 numbers opposite the zero.
  • Orphelins: A smaller group of 8 numbers that don’t belong to the larger sections of the wheel. (Only available in Manchester.)
  • Voisins du Zero: Includes 17 numbers surrounding the zero on the wheel. (Only available in Manchester.)
  • Neighbours: Covers a single number and the two numbers either side of it on the wheel (a total of 5 numbers).

Touchbet vs. At Table Roulette

Touch Bet Roulette

Touch Bet Roulette, also known as Electronic Roulette, is available at all Napoleons venues. It combines live roulette gaming with the convenience of electronic terminals. Players can place bets from individual terminals while watching a live game unfold in real time or choose to play on an automated wheel.

To place bets, touch the screen where you want to place your chip (one touch equals one chip, two touches equal two chips, etc., and different chip values can be selected), and when you wish to cash in your chips, press “cash” to print a ticket that you can use at gaming tables, other machines, or exchange for cash at the Cash Desk.

At Table Roulette

At Napoleons, playing roulette at the table allows for direct engagement with the game and other players. This setting fosters a social environment and necessitates being present at the table, providing a traditional approach to the experience. Players can communicate with the dealer and fellow participants, which enhances the overall interaction during gameplay.

Roulette Etiquette

When playing roulette at Napoleons, it’s essential to follow proper etiquette to ensure a respectful and organised gaming environment:

Placing Bets

Players should begin by placing their bets on the table layout, ensuring that chips are positioned correctly without overcrowding. For inside bets, chips should be placed on top of other players’ chips rather than beside them, to ensure bets are positioned accurately.

Dealer’s Instructions

Once bets are placed, the dealer will provide gameplay instructions and announce when the time to place bets has ended with the phrase, “No more bets.” Players must follow the dealer’s instructions during the game and must stop placing chips once this announcement is made.

Attentiveness and Respect

Players should remain attentive and respectful throughout the game. If assistance is needed, wait for an appropriate moment to speak with the dealer or staff to minimise disruption. If there is a dispute regarding the placement or counting of your chips, calmly inform the dealer who will address the issue promptly and resolve it fairly.

Roulette at Napoleons

Now that you know how to play roulette, why not come along for a memorable night at Napoleons? Whether you’re in Manchester, Bradford, Hull, Sheffield, or Leeds, you’ll enjoy a welcoming environment with professional dealers to guide you through the game.
