Chinese New Year in Manchester City Centre

Happy New Year! In fact, Chinese New Year is upon us once again – usually a great opportunity to immerse ourselves in this vibrant culture and really celebrate. Have you ever witnessed how Manchester celebrates Chinese New Year? Every January to February there is a fantastic atmosphere with lots of fun to be had – and Napoleons Manchester is delighted to be located in the middle of it all.

If you are new to Manchester Chinese New Year celebrations, here is a quick rundown of some of the fun you can come to expect each year, under normal social conditions!

Manchester’s New Year Revelries

Chinese New Year is a fantastic opportunity for the city streets to erupt in cheer, and Manchester really makes the most of it. From street to street across Chinatown and leading down into St Peter’s Square, you will usually find art displays, dance competitions, and even spectacular acrobatics along the way!

What you can usually expect from this part of Manchester at this time of year, is a beautiful tapestry of colourful decorations – paper lanterns criss-crossing the tops of the streets, vivid banners, and decorations – and a firework display or two to really get a sense of authentic Chinese culture.

However, if you have never witnessed the Chinese New Year Manchester has to offer up close, you are going to need to keep a keen eye out for the famous Manchester dragon parade, next time you can visit.

Winding through the streets, a colourful Chinese dragon conga twists and twirls along, to the beat of traditional music and the applause of crowds who have come to follow the dragon’s procession. The Manchester dragon is a must-see feature of the city’s celebrations.

You will find the dragon and all the local celebrations unfolding across the areas of Charlotte Street, Mosley Street, Princess Street and Portland Street from year to year. St Peter’s Square traditionally plays host, and you can always expect big displays and eye-opening colours unfurling across the China Town district.

The Perfect Winter Night Out

If you are looking for an exciting winter night out, the Manchester Chinese New Year celebration customarily offers a rich and evocative display of Chinese culture for visitors to behold. For those interested in branching out from visiting the usual pubs and bars, why not get involved in the big displays and celebrations? The Chinese New Year parade Manchester has to offer year after year really does capture the imagination of people all over the city.

Manchester is a bright, vibrant, and exciting city that we are proud to be a part of. This time of year can be rather sedate elsewhere in the country, which is why the parades and Chinese New Year decorations that light up our city are always worth seeing for yourself! It only comes around once a year, so we recommend adding it to your social calendar, when Chinese New Year celebrations hit the streets of Manchester again.

Manchester is a city that is always bursting with fun, and this is never more apparent than around Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year 2021 in Manchester may be the exception in a history of spirited annual celebrations but that doesn’t mean we can’t look forward to everything the city centre has to offer. If you are planning a much-needed post-lockdown get-together, to celebrate a lockdown birthday or just to let your hair down with friends, take a look at our online booking options.
